One can only hope that the ever vigilant Estate of the late Terry Nation, the creator of Doctor Who’s iconic Daleks, turned a blind eye to the mutant pepperpots’ recent outing in defence of gay rights. Renowned for its fervent protection of copyright, the Nation Estate would undoubtedly be confounded to see the perennial haters utilized to spread love and acceptance.

Sydney women Kathy Sant and Jenny Martin constructed three pink Daleks and assorted props for their “Exterminate Homophobia” float at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on 1 March 2014. Built in the backyard of their Marrickville home, the equal rights Daleks proved a big hit at the parade as they spread the their message, “Equality: You Must Comply”! “David the Dalek” even has his own Facebook page.

  1. Since Roger Hancock died I don’t know who – if anyone – is named as in charge of the estate. Hancock was supposed to be tough.

      • It’s something I’m really interested in as that boy is (inexplicably) suing the estate of Terry Nation (and possibly the BBC) claiming that he invented Davros. Since Nation’s death Hancock’s been ruling the estate with an iron fist – leading to a lot of trouble with them even appearing in the new series – and the last I heard of Hancock was when he said he was going to wander off into the “archive” to look for evidence that supported the fact this kid never invented Davros. And then we never heard from him again. I think the case still rumbles on…

  2. Whomever is currently in charge of the Nation estate, they’d be – insane – to raise objections to this particular use of the Daleks (imagine for a moment the negative publicity if they did object!). Apart from the fact these pink Daleks aren’t being used for commercial gain, media exposure such as this only helps keep the Daleks alive in the social consciousness.
