50th Anniversary Doctor Who Marathon for UKTV Australia and NZ

UKTV (Australia and New Zealand) has announced a bumper schedule of Classic Series Doctor Who to celebrate the show’s 50th Anniversary this month. Doctor Who News has listed the entire month’s programmes which includes a 36 hour marathon on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th November. Starting on Saturday morning at 5.30 a.m. in Australia, UKTV will broadcast the BBC America produced Doctor Who Revisited: The First Doctor followed by the first Doctor Who serial, An Unearthly Child. For the next day and a half every Doctor Who Revisited special for each of the 11 Doctors will be shown, followed by one complete serial from each Doctor’s era.

The BBC Doctor Who Facebook page has created a digital invitation to the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, which allows you to put your name and face into the opening titles. You can then share it with all your friends. Access to the invitation generator can be found here.

An Adventure in Space and Time to Screen in Australia on 24 November

The Doctor Who Club of Australia has today reported that An Adventure in Space and Time, the 90 minute drama on the beginnings of Doctor Who, is to screen on ABC1 at 8.45 p.m. on Sunday 24 November 2013. The Mark Gatiss penned docudrama will be broadcast following the repeat of the 50th Anniversary Special, The Name of the Doctor, at 7.30 p.m. The Name of the Doctor will first be simulcast early on the morning of 24 November. The time has not yet been announced.

Together with showing repeats of Series 6 of Doctor Who each weekday evening at 7.40 p.m. ABC2 is also screening a series of Doctor Who Specials on Sunday nights at 7.30 p.m. Episode 1, which screened last Sunday night and is repeated this evening at 10.30 p.m. is The Science of Doctor Who. Next Sunday, 3 November, is The Women of Doctor Who and the following Sunday, 10 November is The Timey-Wimey of Doctor Who. All specials are repeated on ABC2 on the Tuesday following their original broadcast and are available on iTunes for at least a week thereafter.

50 Years’ Trailer Broadcast in Australia

The Doctor Who 50 Years’ Trailer was tonight broadcast in Australia on ABC1. The 60 second teaser was aired after Kakadu and just prior to the 8.30 p.m. start of Luther. In all respects the trailer is identical to the one shown on BBC One seven days earlier with the exception of the final sting. As Australia’s time is ahead of Britain’s the simultaneous broadcast of the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, on the evening of 23 November UK time will actually be early on the morning of 24 November 2013, Australian time. The sting on the Australian version of the trailer therefore states 24.11.13.

Deconstructing the 50 Years’ Trailer – Fan Reaction

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary trailer was aired on BBC One on Saturday night and released online immediately after. Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Notwithstanding the BBC’s statement that the “trailer does not include any actual footage of the 50^th anniversary episode”, fans have nonetheless dissected and deconstructed the trailer for any hints to The Day of the Doctor’s content.

A number of enlightening articles have been posted by fellow bloggers. Particularly commendable are Blogtor Who’s image breakdown of the trailer which includes 27 screen captures and their article on 50 things to notice. BBC Releases Doctor Who 50 Years’ Trailer

A trailer for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, was screened on BBC One this evening. The press release issued earlier today stated the following:

A specially created trailer celebrating the last 50 years of Doctor Who will air tonight on BBC One, as an exclusive image is revealed today featuring the 11 Doctors.

Travelling through time fans will be taken on a journey from the very beginning using state of the art technology. The special trailer is set to show all of the Doctors as they first appeared on screen, including William Hartnell in high res colour for the very first time, as celebrations ramp up to the 23 November.

A huge moment for the BBC, the 50th celebrations will culminate with the special episode, ‘The Day of the Doctor’, starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt. A whole range of shows have also been commissioned across TV and radio to mark the anniversary.

The minute long trailer will air after Strictly Come Dancing tonight on BBC One and will be also be available on http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho

The Day of the Doctor 3D Screenings Announced for Australia and NZ

BBC Worldwide has recently announced that the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, will be screened in 3D across 87 Australian and 19 New Zealand cinemas on 24 November 2013. The screenings coincide with the international simulcast of the special on the evening of 23 November 2013, London time. Doctor Who News reports that the screenings will be accompanied by a special introduction which will be shown at all cinemas worldwide.

Worldwide Screening of 50th Anniversary Episode

On 26 July The Doctor Who Mind Robber reported an article in the UK’s Sun newspaper in which an international simulcast of the 50th Anniversary Special was mooted. Yesterday, more than two months after the Sun’s report, the BBC officially announced that at least 75 countries have agreed to broadcast The Day of the Doctor on 23 November.

Tim Davie, the chief executive of BBC Worldwide said, “the simultaneous broadcast and cinema screening of the special across so many countries will make for a fitting birthday tribute to our time lord”. The special is due to screen in 200 cinemas across the United Kingdom. Steven Moffat was then quoted as saying, “The Doctor has always been a time traveller. Now he’s travelling through time zones”.

Together with the Eleventh Doctor and his current companion, the 75 minute special will also feature the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, and the first companion of new series Doctor Who, Billie Piper. A hitherto unknown incarnation of the Doctor, played by John Hurt, will also appear. It has been widely rumoured that Hurt’s Doctor will be number 8.5, being an incarnation between Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor and Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor. There has been no further information forthcoming on a comment by the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, several weeks ago. Davison was reported as having said that ”I’m making an appearance somewhere over that period of time but I can’t reveal in what. I can’t reveal anything specific about it. I’m not allowed to. It is a big year for the show and we’re all doing our bit for it. Trust me.”

The ABC yesterday confirmed that The Day of the Doctor will be simulcast live throughout Australia.
